Europe is one of the most urbanised continents on earth, with approximately 75 % of its population living in urban areas. The urban future of Europe, however, is a matter of great concern. More than a quarter of the European Union's territory has now been directly given over to urban land use.

European forest types - November 9, 2006

The primary goal of the proposed European Forest Type scheme is to improve assessment of forest condition based on e.g. indicators reported on sustainable forest management in Europe, within the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE). The scheme thus provides 14 main forest categories for international reporting (pan-Europe).
