Paper and cardboard - recovery or disposal - June 30, 2006

This report presents a review of existing environmental and economic studies covering alternative recovery and disposal options for waste paper and cardboard. The review process was divided into two sequential parts. - A review of life cycle assessment (Part 1), carried out in 20032004 - A review of cost-benefit analysis (Part 2), carried out in 200405. The two reviews can be read independently, whereas in this report an executive summary introduces them, gathering the conclusions from both..

The thematic accuracy of Corine land cover 2000 - Assessment using LUCAS - June 27, 2006

The purpose of this report is to assess the thematic accuracy of CLC2000 by means of an independent data source, the LUCAS data (not used in the compilation of the target database - CLC2000) and statistical methods homogeneously applied to as many of the participating countries as possible. The purpose of validating geographical data is to derive final accuracyreliability figures by means of independent, high resolution and more accurate data, which is related to a similar data acquisition...

Energy and environment in the European Union - Tracking progress towards integration - June 27, 2006

Energy gives personal comfort and mobility to people. However, it also places considerable pressures on the environment, such as emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. EU policy thus aims at integrating environmental requirements within the energy sector. This report measures the progress towards such integration between 1990 and 2003. It builds on a set of EEA energy and environment indicators and related EEA Core Set Indicators.

Annual European Community greenhouse gas inventory 1990-2004 and inventory report 2006 - June 22, 2006

This report is the annual submission of the greenhouse gas inventory of the European Community to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It presents greenhouse gas emissions between 1990 and 2004 by individual Member State and by economic sector. The report shows that, between 2003 and 2004, emissions in the 15 pre-2004 Member States increased by 11.5 million tonnes, or 0.3% and total EU emissions increased by 0.4%.

Air pollution by ozone in Europe in summer 2005 - June 16, 2006

In summer of 2005 levels of ground-level ozone were high in southern Europe with widespread exceedances of the information threshold value (180 micro gm3) laid down in the ozone directive (20023EC). The frequency of exceedances of the information threshold was similar to earlier years, except for the summer 2003, which had a record number of exceedances. The highest one-hour ozone concentration in summer 2005 (361 micro gm3) was observed in Portugal. Other high hourly ozone concentrations...

How much bioenergy can Europe produce without harming the environment - June 8, 2006

Increasing the use of renewable energies offers significant opportunities for Europe to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and secure its energy supply. However, the substantial rise in the use of biomass from agriculture, forestry and waste for producing energy might put additional pressure on farmland and forest biodiversity as well as on soil and water resources. It may also counteract other current and potential future environmental policies and objectives, such as waste minimisation or...

Air quality and ancillary benefits of climate change policies - June 1, 2006

This report analyses projected changes in European air quality up to 2030. It explores the possible benefits of climate policies on air quality and the costs of air pollution abatement. The results show that stringent EU climate change policies (aimed at limiting temperature rise to 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels) could: 1) improve Europe's air quality; 2) cut premature deaths as a result of lower concentrations of ground level ozone and fine particulates (PM2.5); 3) save 10 billion EUR..
