Flyfishing Northwest with David Williams

Suffering from gas price blues but still need your fly fishing fix? David Williams reveals where to go within 30 miles of Seattle with an occasional overnight trip for when you've just gotta leave town.

Teasers - July 29, 2008

Here's a couple of shots taken by my fishing buddy, Sue Morrison. In the carp presentation I give to fly clubs, I suggest using at least a 7-weight rod. Here's why---

Black Lake - July 25, 2008

Let's say you've got to be in Olympia for business and you want to hit a local lake for some mixed species action. That's exactly the situation I was in last Tuesday. I had to drop off Susan Ryan's real estate broker's exam materials so it made sense to double up by checking out some new water.

Lake Ballenger - July 9, 2008

Well, at least it was a nice boat ride on a pretty evening but the fishing totally sucked. Steve Bohnemeyer and I fished Ballenger last night and got skunked--as did everyone else we talked with. Water temperature was 66-70 degrees so the warmwater fishies should have been active. We fished high, we fished low, we fished fast, we fished slow. Swallows working all over the lake but no rises. Hmmm, got me stumped.

Yeah, I know it's not fly fishing but it's still fishing - July 3, 2008

Whoa! Just read a report about Westport salmon fishing in Seattle's other newspaper that floored me. I fished Westport the same day and our boat, the Tequila Too, skippered by Ken Culver, found fish. It wasn't "limits in 45 minutes kind of action," but we had two or three hook-ups at a time more than once. In fact, if the anglers had landed all the fish we hooked, we would likely have come back with full limits.
