In our case though we have multiple levels of services with different naming conventions. For example we have coarse and fine grained services depending on the business abstraction that they provide. The naming convention that I discussed is used for the fine grained services and we have a naming convention that is similar to what IBM suggests for our coarse or high level business services. I'm the Chief Application Architect and responsible for researching options, establishing standards, selecting technologies ... etc. I think you nailed it when you expressed your view that you'd imposed overly narrow naming standards on yourselves.
