Chris Glover's BlogTODO: write something hereCG-43 days- August 31, 2007 It's probably a dumb idea doing a count down, it's not like it makes me more excited about the race, just more stressed. Last night, pool squad, it was a harder than expected session with a 2.1 kilometer main set, with what was supposed to be, little rest. The lane is full of over achievers so we went hard for most of it and rested a bit longer. In the long run that kind of swimming hurts more. Ticked over the last 400 on 5:45 and the last 100 on about 1:20 for future reference. I went to...http://www.jroller.com/complier/entry/cg_43_days CG-44 days- August 30, 2007 I didn't make it to the gym last night, SB pulled out, and I couldn't be bothered going alone. Good commitment Glover. The rest of the squad is on a rest day today, but again, I haven't earned one, so it's a full day for me. I set the alarm for 5:30 this morning, planning on having a work out before the scheduled board session. Woke up at 5:25, turned it off, rolled over, couldn't get back to sleep, and was in the gym by 6:15 anyway. My back wasn't quite as cured as I thought it was,...http://www.jroller.com/complier/entry/cg_44_days CG-45 days- August 29, 2007 Woke up this morning and it occurred to me that the alarm should have gone off. I rolled over and checked the time 20:14 (army time), seemed unlikely since I went to bed at 9:45pm (civilian time). It was still dark, a good sign. Stumbling out of bed the way that only someone who is still 90% unconscious can, I found a working clock. 4:50am. Training starts at 5. I did some brief mental calculations, it was going to be tight, but I had time, even with the mandatory morning dump, however some...http://www.jroller.com/complier/entry/cg_45_days CG-46 days- August 28, 2007 Uh oh, my back suddenly started hurting at 3 this morning. I've never really suffered from back problems, although I once did my neck pulling a sheet over my head, so this is all new to me. It fucking sucks. Easy training day today by necessity. Apparently there's a lunar eclipse on tonight so am heading down to the Icebergs with friends (at 4, I love Bondi) for a lazy swim, sauna (see if a bit of heat treatment does the trick), maybe a massage (I philisophically object to massage though),...http://www.jroller.com/complier/entry/cg_46_days CG-47 days- August 27, 2007 Tired, so tired. Skipped another training session this morning, paddling and swimming, but they said they'd be going easy, so perhaps it doesn't matter. I rode to North Sydney and back as part of my once-a-week trip to the office, I'm calling that training. The run through was everything I feared it would be and more. I slept poorly the night before, mostly due to excitement, and showed up feeling like crap. Also I'd been eating poorly all week, on the start line, I confided in JR "I feel...http://www.jroller.com/complier/entry/cg_47_days CG-50 days- August 24, 2007 Ah the trill of fear when I see how long I have left and how far I have to go. Officially it's a rest day today, but I haven't really earned it so I'll be swimming this evening. I think I hurt myself at pool squad last night, got into a lane with MD and he brought out the worst in me. We were both hurting by the end, to the point where we came out of it injured. Idiots. Tomorrow: the run through. Word of the day: Flight of the Conchords (there's 12 episodes)http://www.jroller.com/complier/entry/cg_50_days CG-51 days- August 23, 2007 Gym last night held no surprises, although it was the first time in a while that I had a spotter available, so I benched 70kgs plus the bar. Love the bench. I'm pretty sure at one point in my life I could do 100kgs, but that was with terrible form, and a couple of years ago I think I regularly cracked 80kgs with more reps than I do now. Of course that was before I almost dislocated my shoulder, that fucked me up for ages. Board training this morning was the usual shambols, didn't get out the...http://www.jroller.com/complier/entry/cg_51_days CG-52 days- August 22, 2007 So much for documenting this shit daily. Anyway, here's a list of things I should start doing 1) taking my heart rate when I wake up, 2) showing up to more training sessions, 3) stop talking constantly through the main set of training sessions, 4) eat better, 5) buy some wetsuit pants to give my arse a chance to heal before the race (vicious board short rash), and 6) stop answering every question with the word 'chicken' (it's a remarkably universal word) Had a bit of a blow out last...http://www.jroller.com/complier/entry/cg_52_days CG-58 days- August 16, 2007 Lazy day of training today. I went down to Tamarama this morning and took a racing board out. There was a messy 3 feet of surf and it took me a while to navigate the break. Negotiating waves is (obviously) the hard bit, there are five options: Go over Go under Go through Go around Turn around and get the hell out of there It was cold and my shoulder was hurting, so going over using the standard technique was problematic. Going under is considered piss-weak. I was constrained to going..http://www.jroller.com/complier/entry/cg_58_days CG-59 days- August 15, 2007 Training for the Gold has hit a few stumbling blocks. The biggest one being that my performance on the ski has gone from average to outright shithouse. This coincided with the purchase of a new ski and a new paddle, changing jobs, getting absolutely flogged in a race, and going to two sessions a day. Or, to break it down into potential causes, equipment, environment pressures, psychological issues, over-training, or injury. My new-found mediocrity has hit me harder than I thought it would....http://www.jroller.com/complier/entry/cg_59_days |
