Thomas Awarded Administrative Rating - July 18, 2008

Melissa J. Thomas, special events associate and administrative assistant for college relations, has been awarded the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) rating from the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). Initially initiated in 1951 as the Certified Professional Secretary program, the CAP designation was started in May 2001 and is the top rating for administrative professionals.

Grow Gives Updates on Burma, Vietnam and China on MPR's "Midday" - July 18, 2008

Roy Grow, the Frank B. Kellogg Professor of International Relations, joined host Gary Eichten on Minnesota Public Radio's "Midday" program. Eichten and Grow discussed the recent natural disasters in Burma and China, comparing and contrasting the respective governmental responses to the Burma cyclone and Chinese earthquake and subsequent flooding. Grow, who joined Eichten from Vietnam via telephone, also discussed the change in attitude towards Americans in Vietnam. The duo touched on many other.

Carleton College Names New Members to Board of Trustees, Reappoints Craine - July 17, 2008

Carleton College has announced the appointment of six new members to its Board of Trustees: Don Frost Jr. 83, Sara Hays 86, Elise Holschuh 77, James Johnson 64, Marc Nol, and Elizabeth Pennie 04. Additionally, the Board announced William Craine 70 has been reappointed as a Trustee.

Carleton Service Office Named to Presidents Honor Roll - July 11, 2008

Carleton's Acting in the Community Together (ACT) service program has been named to the second annual Presidents Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Presidents Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can receive for its commitment to service and civic engagement, according to ACT Director Laura Riehle-Merrill. Mathis '74 Earns Champion of Justice Award - July 11, 2008

Teresa Mathis '74, Executive Director of the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (WACDL), was awarded that group's Champion of Justice Award. As an activist, community volunteer, and executive director of WACDL, she focused much of her efforts on anti-death penalty work from 1984-98. She's served as the WACDL's executive director for 20 years, advocating the group's mission to improve the quality to improve the quality and administration of justice.

Margaret Kelly '84 Named to St. Paul Financial Post - July 8, 2008

Margaret Kelly '84 was tabbed by St. Paul (Minn.) Mayor Chris Coleman to be director of financial services for the City of St. Paul. Previously an assistant commissioner with the Minnesota Department of Health, Kelly served as chief financial officer and fiscal policy director. Her appointment was covered by the Star Tribune and by MinnPost.

Dave Musicant Awarded Patent - July 7, 2008

Dave Musicant, Associate Professor of Computer Science, was awarded US Patent 7,395,253, "Lagrangian Support Vector Machine." The patent was jointly awarded to him and Olvi Mangasarian of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Professor Nicola Melville Releases New CD - July 7, 2008

Assistant Professor of Music Nicola Melville recently released her new CD, Melville's Dozen, on the Innova label. Professor Melville spent three years working with thirteen composers across the U.S. to create a new body of solo piano works, and the resulting pieces are influenced by funk, jazz, blues, rock, tango, Peruvian, and Appalacian folk. The composers on the CD range from Pulitzer Prize finalist Augusta Read Thomas to younger musicians such as Marc Mellits; Carleton's own Philip Rhodes...
