Comment by Mike Wudhapitak on H1B Worker has to go back... The Ironic Twist is that it is from India he has to go back! - August 29, 2008

That's unfortunate for you Joe and your company. It's sad that good people who go through the legal procedures to try to live honestly and meaningfully contribute to society (in taxes and adding to the body of work) are met with situations such as this. Best of luck to Joe, I'm glad it sounds like he will be able to write his own future! !! Comment by Charlene on Choosing Developers - More of an Art than a Science! - August 21, 2008

I have only been the interviewer once. My boss weeded out the competition down to two people. I only had to say that the one he prefered was the better candidate (which was my opinion anyways). But getting the interview can be a pain. Sure I may have a lot of Perl (or some other language) in my resume, but I might really prefer to be programming in another language than what I have been using. And I hated interviews with tests. I end up doing a lot of repetitive programming

Comment by Lars Kristiansen on Can your Company be Totally SaaSy Here's a company that's trying to do it! - August 21, 2008

SaaS is the new revolution. The company I work for (www.requirementone.com) is almost 100% SaaSy and we have taken the concept to our customers and gone one step further - Free SaaS! Software has become free for consumers already (Facebook, Skype, Google etc.) and the next logical step is Free SaaS for the corporate market. To offer Free SaaS you need a virtual SaaS based organisation. !! Entry Link: a href="http:it.toolbox.comblogsnarikannancan-your-company-be-totally-saasy-heres-a

Comment by Evans St. Romain on Can your Company be Totally SaaSy Here's a company that's trying to do it! - August 20, 2008

I have a customer who's been SaaSy for almost 4 years. As a startup, they were all working from home & it was the perfect solution. Now that they've grown and are in a building, staying with the same setup saved a lot of money that would have been spent on IT hardware & software (except for what they spend on me of course). !! Comment by Ralph Wilson on How Software Development Goes Horribly Wrong... and does all the time... - August 12, 2008

Nari, Perhaps the greatest lesson in all of that article is that: If it walks like a duck, swims like a duck, quacks like a duck and has wings and feathers, then it is far more probably that it is a duck than that it is an elephant. In the same vein, if you gather things that look like requirements, make project plans to the day, really spread your "releases" out, and commit to all of the above, you can call it what you want but it is more likely to

Comment by Mike Wudhapitak on How Terrorists Seem to Abuse Free Email Services for their Purposes - August 11, 2008

There's pretty sneaky but simple! Perhaps there would be ways to flag these accounts, as their log-on and message composition patterns would definitely deviate from "standard" usage of these free e-mail services. Nevertheless, it's another issue that companies and governmental agencies will have to deal with in order to uncover these criminals. :( !! Comment by Paul Nussbaum on Working from Home...Your boss may be watching you work remotely! - August 6, 2008

Excellent thought provoking blog entry! In my humble opinion, supply and demand will control this. I don't think people who have choices of where to work will put up with the Big Brother employer. !! Entry Link: Working from Home...Your boss may be watching you work remotely!!!

Comment by Mitch Lauer on Working from Home...Your boss may be watching you work remotely! - August 6, 2008

I run a business where most of the employees work remotely. Meaasuring productivity by keystrokes and camera's is clearly the sign of an insecure and incompetent employer. I measure productivity in results and closed sales. Whether this is happening at the office, on the road or at an employee's home is totally irrelevant to me. !! Entry Link: Working from Home...Yo

Comment by Ralph Wilson on Working from Home...Your boss may be watching you work remotely! - August 5, 2008

IMHO, if I get a call in the middle of the night and have to go to my home office to handle the emergency, it would probably not be wise ot have a webcam recorder set up so that it automatically engages whenever I log in . . . whether I am clothed or unclothed, I am not a pretty site in the wee hours. ;-) Seriously (although I was being serious about not being a pretty site ;-), this is the telecommuting extension of the classic Theory X management style. Unfortunately, if manag

Comment by bureaucrat on Working from Home...Your boss may be watching you work remotely! - August 5, 2008

Hmmm, perhaps some fertile minds could intercept the keylogger and provide it some "file" keystrokes or provide the webcam a few "happy snaps" for the boss - feed the sensors :)) Some not-so-black hat will have fun with this! When an employment relationship is that far gone it's worthless. Productivity is gone and as Nidhi says, it's just attendance money. There are many real jobs like this, so what would make you think working from home would be very different. Employment is a two way
